Create a blank artboard from File > New. Choose the standard “Web” profile. You may turn on your grid view or rulers (View > Rulers > Show Rulers) as instructed in the video if you like. To create a blue guide line, drag from the ruler at the edge of your screen onto your artboard. Use the Rectangle tool to draw a long rectangle for the body of the pencil. With the Polygon tool, click on your artboard and type in “3” for the number of sides. Rotate the triangle while holding shift so the flat side matches up with your rectangle. With the Polygon tool, click on the artboard and type in “5” for the numbers of sides. Use the Delete Anchor Point tool to delete the top point so the shape becomes flat on top. Move the shape between the rectangle and the triangle. Use the Selection tool (black arrow) to draw the shape’s edges so it matches the rectangle width. Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) to make the shape narrower or wider on both sides at the same time. Create a second rectangle above the main rectangle for the metal part of the pencil. Create a third rectangle at the top for the eraser. You should now have the basic shape of your pencil. Select fill colors for the different shapes using the Swatches palette or the Appearance pane: black for the point, tan for the wood piece, yellow-orange for the rectangle, medium gray for the metal and pink for the eraser. Add gradients to the flat colors, beginning with a yellow-orange gradient. Drag colors from your Swatches palette into your gradient pane. (You may need to move your Swatches palette around so you can see both at the same time.) When you have a gradient you like, drag the gradient swatch onto your shape. For the black pencil tip, use a subtle gray-black gradient and change the angle in the gradient pane to 135 degrees. For the gray metal shape, choose a Radial Gradient (rather than Linear) from the gradient pane. For the pink eraser, set the angle to -150 degrees. Using the Type tool, create a text box and type “ALWAYS BE CREATING” in black. The tutorial uses the font AvantGarde, but you may choose any font you like as long as it’s not the default. Convert the text to outlines so they act like shapes. Right-click on the shape and choose “Create Outlines,” or select the text box and go to Type > Create Outlines. Illustrator:: Why Does Eraser Tool Leave Stroke Behind Jun 14, 2012 I tried expanded the appearance of the object I am trying to erase and my stroke is set to none and I have checked the settings and there is nothing there in terms of stroke. Here is a screenshot of what happens when I try to erase anything. Jun 11, 2013 When I use the knife tool on an shapeit leaves a gap where I slice. First I thought it was just an illusion in the program but it stays even after I've exported the image (both by 'save as' in illustrator and 'export' in inDesign). I've been careful not to move the shapeafter I used the tool so I don't think that should be a reason. I've tried on different types of shapes like normal circles and more complex shapes. I've also attempted to start a new file from scratch but with the same result What could the reason be? Is there a setting I should be aware of? This is what I see in Illustrator: And this is what the image looks like when saved as pdf (in illustrator): It also looks the same if I place it in inDesign and then export to pdf. EDIT: I don't know if it is important but the size of the shape is about an A4 or there about. Sep 14, 2013 I am using illustrator cs6 and whenever i try erase paint lines it leaves a thick black ouline of where i erased, i have seen a few posts with the same problem but no solutions. Is their any way to fix this issue or change the settings of the eraser? Sep 26, 2012 I'm working on a logo and am having trouble erasing part of the path of a circle. Here's what I did: I first made an elipse, then cut out a piece of it with scissors so that it looks more like a 'C'. Then I used the pen tool to draw an upside-down 'v' intersecting with the circle. I am trying to erase a little bit of the top of the circle, to make it line up with the vertical line of the 'v', but every time I try to use the eraser, it ends up drawing a line that connects the two end anchor points of the shape I just created. Jun 17, 2012 I have two shapes placed next to each other but the top section displays is a faint line to the left. How do I use the Path Eraser Tool to delete/remove that piece? Or is there a better way to remove? Note: Top image displays without path displayed. Bottom section displays with path displayed. Aug 4, 2012 If I use the eraser tool to remove parts of a straight horizontal line, the resulting lines are not 180°. Apr 5, 2013 I have a piece of artwork with loads of curves and I'd like to smooth out a few areas that appear a little 'wobbly'. Is there an easy way to do this in Illustrator CS6 (other than adjusting with handles)? Feb 9, 2013 I am creating a simple spider for a project. Initally I used the pen tool to make legs. It worked for a bit then all the sudden started filling in an area I didn't even draw with color. I'm not sure what I did to cause this to happen. Mar 21, 2013 i have created a stroke with a calligraphy brush. Now i want to make the stroke a bit thinner at some points of the path. It could be easily done with the width tool but it doesn't work directly on the stroke. Is there a way to convert the stroke so the thickness of the stroke will be kept at the other points? Mar 6, 2013 what I did to lock the stroke size to 1 pt for the rectangle tool. It won't go lower than that. Nov 2, 2013 I'm actually about to punch my computer screen. Ok so say I draw up a triangle with the pen tool Then i hit the colour option it changes to 1pt So I change the weight to 0pt. How I want it, but then the NEXT time i draw up another path or whatever, and hit the colour option it goes to 1pt again!!! This is so fricking annoying i'm about to jump off a cliff? Sep 30, 2013 Am I the only one who has edited a stroke with the stroke width tool, then outlined the stroke only to find a countless number of points and noticeably unsmooth edges? Is there a setting or certain way to ensure that the stroke width tool won't corrupt the smoothness of my shapes? The stroke width tool is the most handy new feature I can imagine, but this problem makes it almost entirely useless, unless designing something where precision and smoothness are not important. Jan 7, 2013 In Illustrator I want to maintain the stroke settings while creating several paths with the pen tool. However, every time I start a new path, the stroke settings revert to what must be a default. I set 16pt + Variable width profile + Basic and stroke a path. When I start a new path, the settings revert to 1pt + Uniform + Basic, and I have to reset back to my original. Other art programs I've used maintain the tool settings most recently used until they are manually changed. How can I get the settings to stay through multiple uses of the pen tool? Jul 24, 2013 In Illustrator CS6 and CC, when the stroke width tool is used on a curve, the curve is actually made up of a series of straight lines instead of smooth vector curves: whereas in CS5 it looks perfect. These images may be too small to see the details, but the difference is there.
